High School Latin Newsletter 9/5/26

Salvete, Parentes! We are three weeks into the school year, and our Latin students have hit the ground running. Here’s a review of what each class has covered, and what’s ahead.

Latin 1

Students started the year by learning why we study Latin, before diving straight into the material: memorizing the case, function, and translation chart, and learning the first declension. They practiced declining nouns, worked through exercises on how Latin verbs use the accusative case to mark a direct object, and used Quizlet practice to build vocabulary.

Coming next: Their first test will take place after retreat, followed by an introduction to second declension nouns.

Latin 2

After a lightning review of grammar forms from Latin 1, students moved into new material: first conjugation verbs in the present tense, followed by the imperfect tense. They practiced conjugating verbs, worked through translation exercises, and learned grammar rules on verb agreement. On Monday, August 31st, they took a test on this material. They also completed an independent reading assignment in Classical Mythology and More.

Coming next: The future tense of first conjugation verbs, followed by questions in Latin and second conjugation verbs.

Latin 3

Students received their textbooks (Lingua Latina Pars I) and settled into a steady rhythm: each chapter (capitulum) is introduced through a grammar handout and an in-class reading, followed by homework in which students independently translate a short story (the Fabella). Over the first two weeks, the class worked through Chapters I, II, and III this way, capping it off with a vocabulary test on Chapters I–III on Friday, August 28th. On Monday, August 31st, they got their tests back and began Chapter IV.

Coming next: Chapter V, following the same pattern of grammar, reading, and Fabella, with the next vocabulary test on Chapters IV–V.

Latin 4

Our most advanced Latinists will spend the year translating the Gospel of Mark in small daily sections, checking their translations each class and using Quizlet to build chapter vocabulary. They wrapped up Chapter 1 with a test on Friday, August 28th, and then they began Chapter 2.

Coming next: Continued translation and Quizlet review through the rest of Mark Chapter 2.
