Mid-September Second Grade Adventures
2nd Grade Newsletter September 21st – September 25th (1)
We had another wonderful week in second grade! This week both classes had the opportunity to work out in the outdoor classroom. It is a wonderful shady, dry space furnished with benches to sit on. It was designed and recently installed by an Eagle Scout from Saint Maximilian Kolbe Parish. Our students enjoyed hearing a story and completing a project in this space.

Ms. Plunkett’s homeroom filled their superstar jar by showing reverence in the Chapel and respect to their teachers, classmates, and school environment. The class chose to celebrate with a class camp-out on Tuesday. We went to the outdoor classroom, ate smores, learned about stars and Grand Canyon and sang songs.

In Mrs. McCains’s classroom our students are laying the foundation for multiplication by building arrays as well as reinforcing the idea of place value by using Math mats and playing cards.

Students are also learning about Native Americans by reading informational text and building project folders. Ask you students about the Inuit people, where they live, what they wear, how they dress and what they eat.
In Science, our students will be busy putting their organs on their human body poster this coming week.
In reading, we have read The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and learned about Author’s purpose. We are creating an illustrated book, done in watercolor and pen, about the parts of a story. We will read and discuss Johnny Town Mouse also by Beatrix Potter this coming week and write about the story setting.

In Language Arts we have finished Unit 2 on digraphs and blends, and we will begin Unit 3 Trigraphs on Monday. The new unit is your student’s binder. We will be writing our final draft for our Fall Banquet Speeches in class this coming week.
In Religion, we will begin our study on the Ten Commandments, learning about one Commandment each week. We will also learn about the Seven Sacraments. This week we will learn about Baptism. Study guides are in their binders. We are also reading two wonderful stories: “Why am I here?” by Matthew Kelly which encourages us to be the best version of yourself and “Fulton Sheen and the Very Bad Week,” which reminds us that we are not our mistakes, but rather Children of God, born with a beautiful purpose.

Have a blessed week!
