Writing to Explore – Man and Morality in Fitzgerald and Chaucer

Jenna Douglas-Fowler · Literature & Economics · September 17, 2026

In American Literature and British Literature, students began exploring texts which frame essential unit questions related to man’s struggle to remain moral, and that struggle shapes great works of art.

American Literature students have started exploring the concept of The American Dream, as well as how setting and narration shape the reader’s point of view (sometimes before we even open the book!). We have also covered the first chapter of our class novel, The Great Gatsby.

We are looking at similar ideas in British Literature, but framing the idea of morality and identity using a few selected texts, including reflections from Jonathan Hume and Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales.

All students have also completed their first round of pre-ACT (9th and 10th Grade) and ACT (11th and 12th Grade) word acquisition.

Students also have some VERY important homework – handwritten drafts of their Fall Banquet Speeches are due to me by the end of the day on Tuesday, September 22nd.
